SOLD - US MARINE VMA-21 SQUADRON PATCH BULLION

Absolutely stunning circa 1951 Korean War United States Marine Corps VMA-121 Japanese made jacket patch by New Itami Studio. The silk, bullion, and cotton patch is beautifully embroidered and in mint condition. The patch is crest-shaped and shows a beautiful blonde riding a large missile and prepared to launch a smaller one from her hand. The background is a five point white star outlined in bullion detail. The base of the patch reads: "VMA-121" in embroidered bullion. The squadron flew the AD Skyraider aircraft and began referring to themselves as "Wolf Raiders" and the blonde featured on the patch is said to be Al Capp's "Wolf Girl" from his Lil' Abner comic strip. In August of 1951 the VMA-151 received the order to engage in combat. In October, the Marine Attack Squadron boarded the USS Sitkoh Bay (CVE-86) and made their way to Pohang Air Base to begin operations. The VMA-121 "dropped more bomb tonnage than any other Navy or Marine squadron during the Korean War." Reference: VMA-121 by Warren Thompson
